World Domination Gardening

Utilize the power of wood, soil, water, and machine

No longer does gardening need to be back breaking, endless labor to produce food. World Domination Gardening explains how to harness nature's unpredictability to grow more food with less work.

Through these three movies, you will not only see two large scale food systems be created in just a few days, but you will also acquire the logic behind these tactics. Whether you are in a cold climate or a warm one, you can gain methods that will work for you.

Engineer your property for resilient food production

World Domination Gardening, large scale permaculture earthworks with Paul Wheaton

This is no fancy pants, scripted Hollywood movie. This is raw, unscripted problem-solving with colorful language and authenticity. You will see the tactics and logic of how to harvest water and create thriving microclimates. With World Domination Gardening, you will get three movies (Ponds, Swales, and Hugelkultur) for one low price.

These three movies came about from a video of a 3-day workshop in hot Southern California, USA. The workshop covered the earthworks for building a pond without a liner, a swale, and a hugelkultur bed on a terrace. Then more footage was added by doing the same workshop over again in a colder climate.

A year later, we returned to the first workshop site and added even more footage! We even had an evaluation by Geoff Lawton, one of the leading experts on large-scale earthworks and permaculture food systems.

Three Core Earthworks Strategies for Regenerative Food Systems

This collection brings together three distinct but complementary approaches to land design: ponds, swales, and hugelkultur. Each movie focuses on a specific strategy for managing water, soil, and organic matter to create resilient, low-maintenance growing systems. The ponds film shows how to capture, clean, and store water naturally without synthetic liners. The swales film demonstrates how to slow, spread, and direct rainwater across the landscape to passively irrigate and build microclimates. The hugelkultur film explores how to use buried wood and organic materials to retain moisture, enrich soil biology, and extend growing conditions. Together, these three methods form a cohesive system for transforming land into a productive, self-sustaining ecosystem with less ongoing labor and input.

PONDS

Clean and store water naturally

No plastic pond liners needed! Ensure a robust supply of clean water for you, your plants, and your animals by creating a natural pond. Watch a sealed pond be created in just three days.

This movie covers:

  •  Digging and sealing a pond with just what nature provides
  • Directing excess water where you need it
  • Removing toxins and pollutants from your water supply
  • Storing water for long-term use

SWALES

Direct water where you want it

Reduce irrigation needs by channeling rain water where you want it to irrigate your land, all while crafting a beneficial microclimate.

This movie covers:

  • Utilizing laser levels to engineer a swale on contour
  • Constructing swales to create cool microclimates in hot regions
  • Preventing and utilizing erosion
  • Creating systems that irrigate your land with only rain water

HUGELKULTUR

Put wood and soil to work for you

Nature can be unpredictable, but you can work with it. Hugelkultur holds water, feeds beneficial microorganisms, and builds microclimates that support consistent food production.

This movie covers:

  • Massive scale hugelkultur to engineer both warmer and cooler microclimates
  •  Sun-scoop hugelkultur to push climate boundaries
  •  The wood and other material that can be used in a hugelkultur
  •  How to harness unpredictability to be more resilient

Swim in pure water

Natural Swimming Pools

Swim in clean, living water right at home with a natural swimming pond designed to work with nature instead of against it. This film shows how to build a beautiful, chemical-free swimming space where plants and aquatic life keep the water clear, while solar-powered circulation quietly maintains balance. You will learn how to create a smooth, functional swimming zone, design a surrounding planted ecosystem that filters and oxygenates the water, and build efficient systems using simple materials without specialized contractors. See how to construct a full-sized pond and a smaller plunge pool using the same principles, and discover practical techniques that make this approach affordable, animal-friendly, and achievable on your own land.

Neil Bertrando has a passion for enriching bioregions by building community and broadening the local
genetic resources of practical plants and animals to relocalize resource supply networks. In design and development he has worked properties from 1/10th of an acre to 100+ acres. He has gained experience working in wide range of climate and cultural contexts from Hawaii to Montana to New Mexico. He has an MS in Environmental Science

David Pagan Butler is a filmmaker and natural pool pioneer known for developing simple, DIY-friendly organic swimming pool systems. Drawing on his background as a BBC cameraman and director, he has spent over a decade creating films and courses that teach people how to build chemical-free swimming ponds powered by natural ecosystems and low-energy circulation. His innovative “bubble-based” approach makes natural pools more accessible, efficient, and wildlife-friendly, helping thousands of people create their own living water spaces at home.
